Unblocking drains in Stratford upon Avon

Drain Unblocking Stratford-Upon-Avon: FAQs

  • How can I clear my blocked drains in Stratford?

There are many reasons why your Stratford drains may be blocked and the cause will ultimately determine the solution. For instance, whilst your outdoor drains might be blocked by leaves and debris, your shower drains could be blocked by hair and product build-up.

If you are able to see either of these obstructions, you can easily clear the blockage yourself using rubber gloves. Sometimes, however, the cause isn’t quite so obvious. If you’ve been pouring fat down your kitchen sink or have drains that have been poorly installed, you will need expert help.

As top drain specialists in Stratford-upon-Avon, we can come out to your property at any time to assess and remedy the situation. We’ll work out what’s wrong, determine how to fix it and get to work right away. We’re affordable, we’re professional and we’re efficient. Why wait and let the problem get worse? Call us today.

  • How can I clear a blocked shower drain in Stratford?

We all lose hair in the shower. Unfortunately, however, a build-up of hair in your plug hole can eventually lead to blocked drains. It’s therefore a good idea to install a hair catcher to prevent the problem before it develops.

Nevertheless, if your Stratford shower drains are already blocked, you’re going to need to take more than preventative action. Leaving the problem will cause it to exacerbate quickly and could soon lead to all sorts of nasty issues like flooding and foul smells.

Many people recommend pouring boiling water down the drain to loosen any blockages, followed by a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. There are also several bathroom drain unblocking products available to buy at the shops. These can work for small, superficial blockages – but for anything bigger or deeper, you’ll need to call in the experts.

At Cotswold Drainage, we have 25 years of experience helping clients in and around Stratford to unblock their shower drains. Get in touch to find out more about how we can help.

  • How can I unblock a blocked outdoor drain in Stratford?

The first thing to do when you notice a blocked outdoor drain at your property in Stratford is to assess the issue. Inspect the area for debris, such as leaves or mud, which may be blocking your drain cover. If you can, try to remove these blockages by hand – always using gloves.

If you’ve done that but your drains are still blocked, try lifting your drain cover. You may need a screwdriver to do this. If there is a visible blockage, you could try to remove it yourself. If not, it’s time to call in the professionals.

As drain specialists in Stratford-upon-Avon, we have all the right tools, from drain rods to jet washes, required to unblock your outdoor drains. We can be with you in less than 24 hours, guaranteeing to solve your blocked drain problem for good.

  • How do I stop my drains from flooding in Stratford?

If your drains are flooding, there’s only one thing for it. Call in the professionals – now! At Cotswold Drainage, we offer an urgent, 24-hour callout service to deal with all emergency drain repairs in Stratford-upon-Avon as quickly as possible. It’s really important to act immediately, as flooded drains can cause serious health problems and structural damage to your Stratford property.

  • How do I stop my drains from overflowing in Stratford?

There are many preventative measures you can take to stop your indoor and outdoor drains from overflowing. For instance, never flush wet wipes down your toilet, avoid pouring fat down your kitchen sink and regularly sweep your garden to prevent leaves and debris from blocking your drain cover.

If your drains are already overflowing, however, you’ll need our help. You’ll have to deal with the issue immediately to prevent things from getting imminently worse. As Stratford’s number one drain repair specialists, we can come out to your property on the same day that you call. Our urgent callout service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – and we’ll throw in a six-month warranty and free CCTV survey after our visit to ensure your unblocked Stratford drains continue to operate as they should well into the future, too.

Drain Unblocking Gloucestershire: FAQs

  • Can I unblock my Gloucestershire drains myself?

Generally speaking, we would always recommend contacting Gloucestershire drain clearance specialists like ourselves as soon as you notice a problem. Although there are many DIY solutions to unblocking your drains, like using vinegar combined with baking powder, these rarely fix the root of the problem. Whilst you might be able to dissolve superficial blockages and remove any outdoor debris, there could still be larger blockages further down the pipeline, which may eventually lead to foul smells, flooding and even structural damage. Our professional team is available 24/7, 365 days a year, to advise, so if you’re not sure if you need our help, simply get in touch to discuss the best course of action.

  • How can I clear my blocked outdoor drains?

If you think your outdoor drains may be blocked, the first thing to do is examine the problem. If you can clearly see leaves, mud and other debris lodged in your drain cover, grab a bucket and your rubber gloves to pull it out. You will then need to lift the drain cover to see if the problem runs deeper.

If your drains are still blocked, call in the specialists. As expert providers of blocked drain specialists in South Gloucestershire and the rest of the county, you can rest assured that we’ll know just what to do to clear your drains. We can be with you in less than 24 hours and have all the equipment we need to get the job done right the first time.

  • My Gloucestershire shower drains are blocked – help!

If water is starting to build up in your bath or the base of your shower, it’s likely that you have a build up of hair and products stuck in your drain. You can buy drain unblocking fluid from the supermarket, which may help to dissolve small blockages. If the problem is more serious and water continues to sit in your bathtub long after use, however, you will need professional help. At Cotswold Drainage, we have all the tools and equipment required to unblock your Gloucestershire shower drains before the problem gets any worse. Contact us to find out more.

  • Why do my Gloucestershire drains smell?

Smelly drains are one of the first signs of a drainage problem. It’s always best to get it checked out to determine the cause and repair any damage that may be responsible before its too late. As specialist drain unblocking experts in Gloucestershire, Cotswold Drainage can come out to your domestic or commercial property to work out why your drains smell bad, get rid of the foul odour and, most importantly, repair your Gloucestershire drainage problem, whether its cracked drainpipes or blocked indoor or outdoor drains. What causes emergency blockages?

Blocked drains can become emergencies when your indoor or outside drains are beginning to overflow. These blockages are commonly caused by just a few key issues.

The most common cause is the build up of foreign objects such as sanitary products, wipes, and nappies. These items do not break down easily and can quickly create a blockage. Fat, oil, and grease (FOG) are similar, solidifying inside your drains, leading to severe blockages.

Tree roots can also infiltrate your drainage system, growing and expanding until they block the flow of water.

Collapsed pipes can also occur due to aging drain systems or ground movement. These will often require immediate professional drain repairs to prevent extensive damage.

Drain unblocking process

Once resolved, it is easy to avoid future blocked drain emergencies with some sensible steps and regular maintenance.

Our number one recommendation is to avoid flushing foreign objects or FOG down the drain. These are the most common cause of blockages and so many could be avoid by just being mindful about what goes down your drains.

Installing drain screens and hair catchers can help reduce any build ups inside your drains, however even hard water can cause slow build ups over time.

We recommend regular drain cleaning and drain inspections to stop issues before they become emergencies. Talk to our team about our routine checks for that extra peace of mind.

Drain unblocking process

Free CCTV survey for peace of mind

After attending an emergency blockage we carry out a CCTV drain survey on the effected run. If this shows the run is clear and in a good state of repair and with no further works required, we guarantee this section of the pipework from being blocked for the next 6 months. Giving our customers peace of mind!

CCTV Drain Surveys for Accurate Diagnosis

Our CCTV drain surveys allow us to inspect your drainage system in detail, pinpointing the exact location and nature of the problem. This ensures precise solutions, saving time and money while preventing unnecessary disruptions.

What is a CCTV Drain Survey?

A CCTV drain survey is a comprehensive inspection of your drainage system using advanced camera technology. It allows our team to inspect the drains without any excavation or disruption to your property. This method can identify issues such as blockages, leaks, root intrusion and structural damage.

Our expert team can view and assess your drains in real-time, identify any issues at hand and provide solutions to keep any long-term problems from occurring.

The process involves sending our robust, waterproof and durable cameras down your drains which offer a live view of the systems.

Drain unblocking process

We record the whole process to not miss anything of importance, while also noting down anything we spot there and then. We can adapt to your surroundings with our engineers having the necessary tools, such as waterproof cameras, access rods, crawlers and SONAR units, to survey all types of drains and systems.

Once we have searched your drains to find the problem, we will retract the cameras and other equipment and create a report with viable solutions. Our goal is to give you a clear picture of what is going on and provide you with the best available options, so that you can make the best possible decision.

Frequently Asked Drain Inspection Questions

  • Which Issues Can A CCTV Drain Inspection Identify?

There is a wide range of issues a CCTV drain inspection can identify including, blockages, structural damage, flow issues, root intrusion, displaced joints, fat build up, broken segments and fractured/collapsed pipes – a drain camera survey can provide live visual feedback without the need to cause any excavation or disruption to your property.

  • How long does a video drain inspection take?

The length of a video drain inspection will vary on factors such as the length and diameter of the drains and the size of the drainage system. Typically, Cotswold Drainage can perform a survey within an hour or two, but for larger systems, it will take a longer amount of time. We can provide you with a free quote which will inform you of the estimated time it will take to perform.

  • What does a CCTV drain survey report include?

A CCTV drain report contains important data that will be used to confirm the condition of your drains. An overview of the survey job, how long it took, the length of the drainage inspected, and the preliminary findings are all included in a CCTV survey report. A map of the drains, a survey sheet and a comprehensive list of recommended solutions based on the findings will also all be included. We also offer the video and picture evidence that was captured during the survey within the report.

  • Can you inspect all types of drains?

Our CCTV drain surveys are versatile to inspect various types of drains across domestic, commercial and industrial properties. We can inspect different-sized drains as well as underground and above-ground drains, including sewer lines, stormwater drains, plumbing systems and some types of ductwork.

  • When do you need CCTV?

We recommend a CCTV survey if you're experiencing repeat issues. The CCTV will identify the problem area and we will be able offer an effective solution. We also recommend a CCTV survey if you are buying a new property. We would be able to map the drains and also do a full survey of the underground drainage. This will give you a full understanding of the condition and where all the drains run. On completion you will be issued a full drain report, a layout of the drainage as well as a quote for any remedial work to be completed.

General Binding Rules 2020 | What You Need To Know

What you need to know about the

General Binding Rules 2020

The UK General Binding Rules 2020 (GBR 2020) is a set of regulations that came into effect on 1st January 2020, which apply to anyone who owns, operates, or uses a septic tank or small sewage treatment plant (STP) in England. These rules are designed to protect the environment and human health by ensuring that domestic wastewater is treated and disposed of safely and effectively. What are the implications of the GBR 2020 for septic tanks and why are treatment plants a better alternative?

A Cotswold Drainage van ready to fix some blocked drains

Implications of the GBR 2020 for Septic Tanks

The GBR 2020 requires all old tanks that discharge into surface water to be upgraded or undergo a septic tank conversion by 1st January 2020 or when the property is sold, whichever is sooner. Septic tanks that discharge into the ground are exempt from this requirement but must still comply with the general binding rules. These rules include:

  1. Septic tanks must be installed and operated in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Septic tanks must be maintained and emptied regularly to prevent overflowing or pollution.
  3. Septic tanks must not discharge into a watercourse, unless it meets the relevant environmental standards.

Septic tanks can be effective at treating domestic wastewater, but they have limitations. They only provide primary treatment, which means that the wastewater is only partially treated before it is discharged. This can result in the pollution of the environment and cause harm to human health. Furthermore, septic tanks require regular maintenance and emptying, which can be expensive and inconvenient.

Why Treatment Plants are a Better Alternative

Sewage treatment plants are a better alternative to septic tanks because they provide more effective treatment of domestic wastewater. They use a combination of mechanical, biological, and chemical processes to treat wastewater to a higher standard than a septic tank. The treated water can then be safely discharged into the environment, meeting the relevant environmental standards.

Treatment plants are also more flexible than septic tanks. They can be installed in a wider range of locations, including areas with high water tables, and can be adapted to suit the specific needs of a property. Furthermore, septic tank maintenance is required more often making treatment plants a more cost-effective waste solution.

Drain unblocking process

The UK General Binding Rules 2020 have implications for anyone who owns, operates, or uses a septic tank or small sewage treatment plant.

Septic tanks that discharge into surface water must be upgraded or replaced by a sewage treatment plant to comply with the rules.

Treatment plants are a better alternative to septic tanks because they provide more effective treatment of domestic wastewater and require less maintenance.

What's the difference between sewage treatment plants and septic tanks?

When it comes to wastewater management, many homeowners still rely on septic tanks. However, sewage treatment plants offer a more sophisticated and eco-friendly alternative. While septic tanks serve their purpose, they only partially treat wastewater, making it less ideal for modern environmental standards.

Sewage treatment plants go beyond partially treating wastewater. They provide a comprehensive solution that thoroughly purifies water before releasing it back into the environment. Unlike septic tanks, which allow wastewater to disperse into the ground, treatment plants break down organic matter and remove harmful bacteria, significantly reducing pollution.

Septic tanks

Sewage treatment plants use a series of chambers and filters, ensuring that even the smallest impurities are removed. This advanced system not only safeguards your home's surroundings but also protects the local environment.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, sewage treatment plants offer practical benefits. By effectively treating wastewater, they reduce the risk of ground and water pollution, ultimately leading to cleaner, safer properties.

How do sewage treatment plants work?

First, wastewater flows into the primary settlement tank. Here, heavier solids settle at the bottom, forming sludge, while the lighter materials float to the top. This initial separation is crucial for preparing the water for further treatment stages.

Next, the water moves into aeration chambers. In these chambers, air is introduced to encourage the growth of bacteria that break down organic matter. This biological process is highly effective at removing contaminants, ensuring the water is cleaner by the time it leaves this stage.

Sewage treatment plant

Following aeration, the water enters a secondary settlement tank. In this chamber, remaining solids settle out, leaving behind cleaner water. The slower flow rate in this tank allows even the smallest particles to be filtered out, adding an extra layer of purification.

The final polishing stages involve removing any remaining impurities. Advanced filtration systems or chemical treatments may be employed to ensure the water meets stringent environmental standards. This meticulous process guarantees that the discharged water is safe and free of harmful pollutants.

The entire treatment process, from initial settlement to final polishing, operates seamlessly to provide efficient and effective wastewater management. You can trust that a sewage treatment plant will safeguard the environment and protect your home’s surroundings.

Why is septic tank cleaning important?

Maintaining a septic tank is not just about avoiding the unpleasant odours from your garden. It’s a critical aspect of home maintenance that impacts your health, property value, and the environment. A neglected septic tank can turn your dream home into a nightmare quicker than you might think.

Regular cleaning extends the lifespan of your septic system. By sticking to a routine cleaning schedule, you reduce the need for costly repairs and replacements. The accumulation of sludge and scum is kept in check, which means fewer mechanical failures and a longer-lasting system.

Neglected septic tanks can lead to environmental hazards. Did you know that polluted groundwater can stem from an improperly maintained septic tank? When these systems fail, the untreated waste seeps into the soil, ultimately contaminating nearby water bodies and posing health risks to your family and community.

Clean septic tanks prevent blockages and backups. There's nothing worse than a slow drain or the foul stench of sewage backup in your home. Regular cleaning minimises these issues, keeping everything flowing smoothly and your house smelling fresh.

Properly maintained tanks protect your property’s value. If you're planning to sell your house, prospective buyers will appreciate a well-looked-after septic system. It’s a sign of a responsible homeowner, which adds value to your property in their eyes.

Drain unblocking process

How are septic tanks are cleaned?

The first step is always a comprehensive inspection. Our technicians will check for sludge build-up and any evident problems. This initial check helps establish how much work is needed and if there are any immediate repairs required.

Next, we pump out the waste using a vacuum truck.  These are equipped to handle both solid and liquid waste, ensuring your tank is completely emptied. This process helps reduce the chance of blockages and keeps your system functioning seamlessly.

High-pressure water jets are then used to clean the interior surfaces. These powerful cleaners scrub the tank, making sure all remaining residues are blasted off, leaving it spick and span.

Once the inside is clean, it’s time to check for any cracks or leaks. Any structural damage identified is noted and reported for further action. This step is crucial for preventing leaks that could lead to severe environmental hazards.

Our team adhere to eco-friendly practices and ensure all waste is taken to approved sites for disposal. This action not only keeps your conscience clean but also complies with legal requirements.

What are pitch fibre pipes?

Introduced around the 1950s, Pitch fibre pipes revolutionised the plumbing scene in the UK. Initially celebrated for their cost-effectiveness and ease of installation, these pipes made their way into both residential and commercial properties. Composed of a mix of cellulose fibres and coal tar pitch, they offered a more affordable alternative to traditional clay and metal pipes.

The average lifespan of a pitch fibre pipe is around 40 years. As a result, the pipes are now prone to certain issues. There has recently been an increasing need for professional surveys and repairs. Some of these pipes incorporated asbestos, which has raised additional safety concerns. Ongoing maintenance and timely repairs are now crucial for properties with pitch fibre pipes.

Drain unblocking process

There are still a number of positive properties for pitch fibre pipes. They are non-corrosive, setting them apart from metal pipes that are susceptible to rust and decay. The non-corrosive nature of pitch fibre lines allowed them to be used in various environments without risking material degradation.

Their low thermal conductivity makes them energy-efficient. Unlike metal pipes, which can lose heat rapidly, pitch fibre pipes maintain their thermal integrity, contributing to energy conservation in heating systems.

Pitch fibre drains are flexible and can adapt to various ground conditions. However, this flexibility can also be a double-edged sword. While it makes the pipes versatile and easier to work with, it also means they're more likely to deform under substantial weight or pressure. Regular inspections are necessary to catch any signs of deformation early before it escalates into a more severe issue.

Common Issues with Pitch Fibre Drain Pipes

One of the most common issues is blistering and deformation. The blister formation can eventually lead to significant structural weaknesses, which can cause the pipes to collapse and completely block the drains.

Root infiltration can be another recurring problem. Over time, the weakened structural integrity of these pipes becomes an easy target for tree roots. Roots can penetrate compromised areas of the pipes, leading to clogs and potential collapses.

Pitch fibre pipes are also prone to internal sludge buildup, further exacerbating drainage problems. The material’s tendency to trap waste material can lead to stubborn blockages that require professional cleaning, or jetting.

External pressures such as soil weight can increase the risk of pipe collapse. The same flexibility that makes these pipes easier to install can also be their undoing when subjected to heavy, consistent pressure from the surrounding soil.

Unblocking a drain

Visible signs of issues often include slow drainage and frequent blockages. Recognising these symptoms early can prompt timely intervention, preventing more severe damage and costly repairs. Regular monitoring and professional inspections can help you stay ahead of these common issues, ensuring your drainage system operates smoothly.

Timely repairs of pitch fibre pipes can help to prevent severe property damage caused by undetected leaks. If damaged pipes are left unrepaired than can eventually cause extensive water damage, which can be both costly and disruptive.

Fixing problems early also extends the lifespan of the pipes. By addressing minor defects before they escalate, you can prolong the duration of your pitch fibre pipes. This proactive approach ensures that you get the most out of your existing drainage system and can be very cost-effective in the long run.
